Enzo and I on his 18th birthday. He looks pretty good for such an old guy! |
Welcome to my new and improved monthly newsletter, Green Art Scene, where I'll be featuring information about green designers, architects, builders, developers, artists, art materials and other happenings in the green art world.
It's Fall, and we're finally getting some warm summer weather here. Go figure! I'm hoping that this beautiful weather will hold for the Beverly Hills art show in mid-October. That's the thing about doing an outdoor show -- you never know if the weather will cooperate!
I hope to see you there, and in the meantime, I hope you're also enjoying some glorious fall weather!
Best wishes,

| Santa Monica Household Hazardous Waste Center |
The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that between 35 and 103 million gallons of post-consumer architectural paint are disposed of in the United States each year. Much of this paint is destined for landfills, except in cities that have household hazardous waste facilities. I live in Santa Monica, and we are fortunate to have a center that collects hazardous waste. |

|

|
| The Santa Monica Household Hazardous Waste Center is one of my favorite places to visit. Among other things, they collect discarded house paint, and they give away the paint that is still viable for free. By checking in every few weeks, I have acquired a great collection of many colors and finishes for my artwork. They are glad to give the paint away and see it put to use, rather than having to dispose of it as hazardous waste. |

Manuel Monterrubio is a Hazardous Materials Technician at the facility, who enjoys talking about his work and the importance of the proper disposal of hazardous materials. He gave me a tour of their office, which is built from two used shipping containers. The walls are drywall made from compressed newspaper, and they're insulated with shredded discarded blue jeans. Manuel also hosts field trips for school children at the center. One of the things he shows them is three of my small paintings hanging in the office, to give them ideas about what can be done with the discarded paint. |

You have to be a resident of Santa Monica to drop off household hazardous waste at the center, but anyone can visit and pick up discarded paint. In addition to house paint, they sometimes get art supplies. When I was there last week, they had some Nova Color acrylic paints and sculpture materials. Hours are Wednesday - Friday 9am - 1pm and Saturdays 9am - 2pm (except holidays). The best day to check out the free paint cabinet is Saturday, when most of the other city yards are closed. |

Save the Date: Beverly Hills Affaire in the Gardens, October 16-17 |
 |
Save the date for the upcoming Beverly Hills Affaire in the Gardens art show! It's Saturday and Sunday, October 16 and 17, from 10am to 5pm both days. The show is four blocks long, in the park along Santa Monica Blvd., between Rodeo Drive and Rexford Drive. I'll be in Booth #354, between Canon Drive and Crescent Drive, right across from the Wine Garden (see map below). I'll have all of my latest work there, as well as my small paintings, miniature paintings, and Frameable Art Cards.
I look forward to seeing you! |
