January 2009

Greetings, and welcome to my first newsletter of the new year! I’m writing to update you on my latest work and upcoming shows. I am very interested in hearing about the projects you are working on and would appreciate being added to your mailing list.

I'm starting the year with a show in Los Angeles, Insight/Inside LA at Mount St. Mary's College, and a traveling show, The Sketchbook Project, out of Atlanta. Details and dates are below.

My paintings were featured in the latest Studio Visit magazine published by Open Studios Press. You may have already received a copy, but if not, ask to be added to the Studio Visit mailing list by writing to info@studiovisitmagazine.com.

My artwork is represented by Translations Gallery in Denver, Pierre Paul Art Gallery in Ann Arbor, and LACMA's rental gallery in Los Angeles.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my work. I wish you all the best for 2009!

New Work

These are two paintings I recently completed for my "Oops!" and "Oops! Landscapes" series, both acrylic latex on canvas.

The "Oops!" story:

The "Oops!" and "Oops! Landscapes" paintings evolved out of my fascination with the "Oops!" paints at Home Depot -- paints that were mixed incorrectly, rejected by the customer, or simply left behind. Acrylic latex paint is a fabulously gooey medium that pours beautifully and is receptive to manipulation while the colors stay separate from one another. With the "Oops!" paintings I am reclaiming that which has been rejected, transforming mistakes into art.

Allegro is 18 x 18 inches -- a fanciful piece with an upbeat flair.  I poured the paint onto the canvas, created the overall design by manipulating the support, and finished it by running my fingers through the wet paint to create the swirl patterns.  As with all of my paintings, the paint wraps around the sides, and it is ready to hang with or without a frame.

Genesis is 24 x 30 inches, and is part of the "Oops! Landscapes" series.  Acrylic latex takes a week or more to dry, depending on the weather, and the pattern sometimes shifts and settles during this time. Genesis and Allegro both acquired depth and texture during the drying period as the fingerpainting lines contracted more than the solid areas of color around them, creating a ridged effect. Some of the paints are semi-gloss, and others are flat, adding interest to the surface of the paintings.

Other Bodies of Work

I also have pieces available from other bodies of work. Click on an image, and it will take you to all of the paintings in that body of work.

Newly Redesigned Website

I recently redesigned my website to make it easier to see all of the images quickly. My paintings are divided into bodies of work, and on each page there are thumbnails to the right of a central image. As you move your mouse over the thumbnails, a larger image of the painting appears in the center of the page, along with the painting's title, medium, dimensions, and the year the piece was completed. You can see the new layout at www.tondro.com.
